May Day

London was quiet this morning. The pheromones of fear and distrust subdued the commuters, most of whom had eschewed their traditional office dress for something more casual, the better to avoid becoming a target.

Workmen were boarding up McDonald's in Leicester Square and, rather oddly, Jigsaw opposite Charing Cross. The whole of the courtyard outside Charing Cross Station had been sealed off by the police.

It's May Day in London.

The day's been quiet so far, with a few sirens in the distance. Lunchtime is coming, though, and the BBC reports that the protestors are on the move. There's been a single arrest. Will more follow?

I'm heading out for lunch. The helicopters are circling overhead and a siren just went past the office.

London was a little quieter than normal over lunch. Some kids have obviously skipped school as a result of the protests and were wandering around in little gangs of school uniforms. The strangest shops had been boarded up. Mobile phone shops? Fair enough. Whittards? Well, all that 'exploitation' of tea pickers and coffee growers might be cause for concern. Argos? Why Argos?

A couple of policemen lingered outside the offices of Janes, the defence magazine publishers just up the road from us who are on the hitlist. And, for an hour's wandering, that's all I saw. The BBC claims 30 people protesting on Oxford Street and a couple of hundred down Holborn way, but all seems quiet. Maybe the heart has gone out of the anti-capitalist movement?

It's kicked off. See [livejournal.com profile] nortysarah's journal for details.
