Uhh, he was walking along and there was a cannon there so he stuck his head in to see how it worked and somebody lit it and he died.
Uhh, he was in a tragic accident where his friend came up to him and put his arms around him in a warm embrace and forgot he was holding a dagger in one of his hands.

It'd be a rather clumsy government conspiracy. Doesn't the UK have a draconian Official Secrets Act that could let them silence the guy easily, quietly, and harmlessly (in the sense of not killing him)?
