Now this is a strange article. BBC Technology writer Bill Thompson is arguing that new technological measures put in place by the Bush Administration are turning the US into something of a Police State. That initially seems rather rich, given that we have CCTV cameras on most street corners these days. However, he acknowledges that later on. So, perhaps this is a decent argument that things are not necessarily that much worse in the UK.

I'm certainly a Pollyanna, but I'm none too worried. The moment anyone is arrested for a "crime" related to the Patriot Act or any of these other bits of new legislation/technology, they'll be making their way to the Supreme Court and the whole edifice will crumble. Things are paranoid right now, yeah, but that's to be expected. In the end, American common sense and hatred of the government will win out, as they usually do. I don't think Bill Thompson understands America very well if he thinks it's a good candidate for a future police state. The USA is (and may one day be) many things, but a totalitarian society is not one of them.
