Being nosey on a train

I'm on a train again, heading for a quick meeting in Birmingham. Now, I'm all for mobile technology, after all I'm posting this using an iBook, Bluetooth adaptor and mobile phone. That's pretty damn geeky right there.

However, the woman sat opposite me is busy texting using two mobile phones simultaneously. Yet, she's busy writing in an old, spiral-bound A4 pad. This goes to show that, in the UK at least, mobiles really are the tech of choice for the non-tech people out there. Odd that the US has adopted them more slowly and with less enthusiasm than we have. I'm sure there must be a reason for it: after all, the US is usually ahead on most things technological.

I bet there's a relationship between the cost of landline phone service and the cost of text messaging. Here in the US, my landline costs next to nothing with no per-call charge within about a 30-mile radius. My cell phone costs a fair amount per call, and my cell service charges about ten cents per text message, to boot.
