I shifted over to saying "my background is in journalism" after a year or so out of the newsroom.

To me, it depends on whether you ever expect to go back to it. At this point I have no intention of getting back into a newsroom or magazine office, so I just say I'm a writer/editor, and if people ask I'll fill them in on the newspaper stuff.
