Blair and co tried to bully/guilt this bill through and got spanked for it. Lord knows I'm no fan of the Tories, but when the government act this badly you have to wonder.

There was a comment, I think by Charles Clarke, that the open-ended nature of the proposal would be "used responsibly." He might say that now, but who is to say that some future government won't abuse the powers. Shades of 1984 I think.
