What's the best way to password-protect a folder on a Windows XP system?

http://www.pcworld.com/howto/article/0,aid,110663,00.asp suggests compressing them as easiest way.

http://www.worldstart.com/tips/file-management/password-prtct-fldrshtm.htm if your HDD is formatted the correct way.

Other than buying software, those tend to be the most common ways suggested.

Haven't really tried either; my work computer is using Novell and my home computers (which are XP) don't have any top sekrit files on them.

This is actually for The Wife, who has various academic data files that need protecting.

The first didn't work, I'll pass on the other suggestion. Many thanks.
