LJ Crisis

What the hell should I be doing with this journal? That question has been bouncing around my head for a couple of weeks now. There were some good reasons for starting it initially. In particular, I thought it would be a good way of keeping Mum up to date with my life while I was away. Communication with her became all the more important after Dad dies. However, I haven't been away as much in the last three month as I was at the tail end of last year, so that reason has declined in importance.

Keeping people informed about my life is another reason. Frankly, most of the people who read my journal have some contact with my on a daily basis online. Now, if I could hook a few more of my offline friends into the LJ habit, than maybe that reason would have more force. Until then, it too matters little.

So, are my little rambles about inconsequential events really of interest to anyone? Would I be better writing small essays on my thoughts about current events? Should I share my thoughts on philosophy, writing, gardening and modern technology? Would those entries just turn into long essays which would get lost behind LJ Cuts?

What do you think?

Underestimating the inconsequential

I think, quite seriously, that you should LJ anything that comes along and feels like something you'd want to pass along. You say you have daily contact with most of your friends anyhow, so the inconsequential details seem unnecessary. I can't agree. In a lot of ways, the Livejournal (or Blog) form is ideal for those momentary thoughts, those asides, those things that cross your radar and help chart the course of your day. By making note of them, you pass those channel markers on to others, and help them chart their courses as well. That's not something you might do when hanging out in a chatroom with friends, or talking on the phone or over a cup of tea with someone.

This is an entirely different form of communication, and its strengths are different as well. So long as you enjoy the process, I don't think there's a pressing need to second guess what you end up doing.

(Besides, I like the reviews. ;)

see now, I'm the "friend" (read as psychotic reading grrl) that would read all of those postings. So I say, rant on, write on, have fun!

I enjoy reading about what you're doing; I don't run into you as much at the Usual Online Place as I used to, since I'm generally not on as much. That, extended to others on here, has been the value of LJ to me, really.
