From a press release that's just hit my in-box:

CUPERTINO, California— May 4, 2004— Apple® today announced that Steve Jobs will kick off its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) with a keynote on Monday, June 28, 2004, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at San Francisco’s Moscone West. This year's keynote will include a preview of “Tiger,” the next major release of Mac® OS X.

Adam,
Since you've been using Macs for ages now (or so it seems), what sort of Mac would you recommed to me (who's on a student budget) and need it for Word (or any writing software usable for both freelance work and scriptwriting), Photoshop, Acrobat, and Dreamweaver?

I know you addressed your question to Adam, but I'd suggest an eMac (http://www.apple.com/emac) if you don't need to be portable. They're great machines. I know many happy users.

They also just dropped the entry level edu price on eMacs to £516 (from over £600).

Fraser's spot on. My wife's ex-faltmate has just bought herself an eMac and they're lovely little machines at a great price. If you need portability, look at the 12" iBook. Bruce has just bought one of those...

If it was my money, I'd take the Combo Drive model and add the 512Mb RAM and 80Gb hard disk upgrades for a round total of exactly £600.

I have a Superdrive on my PowerBook, and I think I've used it exactly three times in one year.

Not Mac related (as such) but if you're registered as a student in the UK, both Macromedia and Microsoft offer massive student discounts - the Microsoft deal is called Microsoft Select and your university computer centre should be able to sort you out. Same for Macromedia.

(I'm assuming you're in the UK and at a University - sorry if that's not the case.)

Good point.

The Apple Store for education should offer decent discounts. Lorna used it quite extensively during her PhD.
