Once more, the music industry
Jan. 21st, 2003 03:00 pmWell, our friends in the music industry have come up with another brilliant idea to stop all that pesky music theft us untrustworthy computer users are indulging in daily. (Regular readers may recall that I'm against obtaining music for free, but just as against dumb music industry initiatives that stop me ripping my CDs and playing the MP3s on my iPod). The industry wants to start charging ISPs to make up for their lost revenue...
The next step, obviously, is to shut down that whole pesky Internet thing and it enables the theft of copyright material!
All I can say is "Good for you, Robbie".
In better news, Peter Gabriel's OD2 online digital music service is behind a Free Digital Download Day in Europe on 21 March. I shall certainly be taking advantage of that. 150,000 tracks will be available, with around a third able to be transferred to MP3 players or burnt to CD. It's a loss leader to promote the legitimate online music services and a damn good idea, too.
