If you have access to both a laptop and a desktop, which do you find it easier to write with?

I find myself happier writing on the iBook than I do on the iMac. It just seems a more comfortable and natural size, and it sucks my attention in a way that the iMac doesn't. Conversely, the iMac is much better for photo editing, movie editing and DVD-burning, that sort of thing.

What's your experience?

I'm enjoying writing on the laptop, yes.

Laptop for writing, but I think a lot of that is down to the feel of the keyboard and it's size - I've only got little hands, so I quite like the slightly smaller keyboard that the laptop has.

I'm happy using either for media editing, but that's mainly because I have an external mouse on the laptop. If I had to use the touchpad that mine comes with, I'd rarely use it for anything other than text editing, and even that with reluctance.

Horses for courses.

If I'm doing something that involves data entry or manipulation (or even editing) I find it much easier to use my desktop: the bigger screen, bigger keyboard and generally more "oomph" (its a 2.6 Ghz Athlon). It's also the only machine with the disk authoring and burning software so there's no choice there.

However, if I'm being "creative" - writing fiction or even sourcebook material where I don't have to reference other material regularly - I find it much more relaxing to sit in a comfy chair with the laptop on my knees and type away. The latter is possible even if I have visitors who are chatting away (or more often if they're watching TV) but sitting at the desk sets you apart from the group.

Desktop. I'm a really fast typist if I'm at a natural keyboard. I become an ordinary mortal at a square keyboard.

I've had a lot of trouble with my laptop and my hard-drive decided to crash a while back. Nonetheless, when I work with freelance projects I find it easier to work by the stationary computer simply because it is situated in a room where there's very little space to work on the laptop unless I lie on the bed.

However, it feels more fun to write on the laptop so when I want to combine fun with work instead of simply concentration on fun work, I use the laptop. I feel more free that way, and in many cases, just like you, I feel happier with it.

Still wish I had a Mac, though.

I vastly prefer a desktop keyboard. I can cope with a laptop, but I keep having to break flow to remember where something is or to retype something.
