Is barn dancing the same as what we call square dancing in the US? From the looks of it, it must be very similar.

I suspect that barn dancing is the English country dancing tradition that became square dancing in the US, yes.

I'm no expert in such matters, but you're probably right. Amazing (or not) how many American cultural traditions go back to the English countryside. Reminds me of how linguists travel to Appalachia to learn how 17th century Gaelic was spoken.
