This is probably not a surprise to people who have been reading my journal of late.

The test is ass. If you've got an opinion, but don't pick the 'flaming idiot' position, it's pretty obvious where you'll go.

So, were you against immigrants, abortion, homosexuals, or in favour of the ten commandments or capital punishment?

Against homosexuals and abortion, in favour of the ten commandments?

No.

For homosexuals (as defined in the survey), for limited abortion and against having the 10 commandments on the wall. Religion is a chioce, by its very nature.

But for abortion (to which I am totally opposed), I had the same answers, yet was deemed a liberal. Weird.

Where did you go on immigration? I was very much in the "yeah, as long as you integrate" category.

[identity profile] maliszew.livejournal.com 2003-02-04 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, didn't see that answer. I'd have chosen it if I had read it properly -- and been deemed a conservative. All is now right with the world.

Against immigrants, for death penalty?

Against death penalty, for immigrants as long as they learn the language and integrate.

But for abortion then we would seem to have answered identically (now that I corrected my immigration position). Not surprising, I suppose.

You know, that's always been a bit of an odd one for me.

Is there an immigrant group that doesn't start out gen 0 in the 'ethnic ghetto' (well, aside from my own, which foolishly jumped in with both feet, bless 'em) and then the 1st gens started to assimilate?

Unless, of course, you come in as a part of the dominant ethnic group, in which case it's not so much a case of assimilation as it is unpacking.

Which comes as no surprise to any that have ever met me.

I agree with the previous respondent that the test is largely ridiculous.
But I took it anyway, bleeding heart liberal lefty that I am.

I've never come across one of these quizes that isn't complete bunk. Thay can be interesting starting points for discussions, though.

Yeah, I guess. Though I'm not sure we've ever needed outside stimuli to provoke discussions between us. It'd be interesting to see where Mr Meeks fitted on that scale... somewhere between the two of us, I suspect.

I'm not convinced. Martyn's further right than me on a lot of issues, or haven't you heard his "council estate scum" rants? :)

[identity profile] ephraim.livejournal.com 2003-02-04 09:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah - but there are no questions about "council estate scum". And therein lies the issue with all of these things. There are very few people that are consistent enough to be accurately categorised by this sort of thing. I am generally, a left-wing liberal. But on some subjects I am a far left extremist, and on others (admittedly, very few) I am decidedly right-wing. It's (thankfully) impossible to pidgeon-hole people.

As for the Council Estate Scum, which I assume is an England thing, this WAS for American politics.

For Council Estate Scum, read Trailer Park Trash.

They're pretty close.

Ahhh. Can't be good, that.

Damn, Trailer Park Trash is the best insult to call someone when you're playing cards, though.

I think that's a pretty astute comment. I certainly find it very difficult to identify with any political party these days, because my views on different issues range from"hard" left to "middle" right. I suspect that's at the heart of the disenchantment many people are feeling with politics in the UK right now. The parties still assume that because we agree with them on points a, g and w, then we should agree with them on most things, fitting nicely into their niche of the political spectrum. I know no-one of our generation for whom that's true.
