iPod's Clean Little Secrets

C'mon, you can't have missed the iPod's Dirty Little Secret video, can you? Well, Daring Fireball didn't, and has helpfully supplied some more accurate, but less sensational slogans they could use instead.

My personal favorite:

"I'm so fucking dumb I've not only videotaped myself committing criminal vandalism, I've released the footage publicly"

Splendid.

Oh, come on, Adam - even for a rabid Mac-head like yourself that's a lot.

Are you seriously happy that Apple want to charge you almost as much to replace the battery on an I-Pod as buying a new machine?

But they don't cost nearly that much.

The official replacement is less than £100, you can get unofficial replacements for around £50 or less. More to the point, my iPod is pushing two years old and the battery is just peachy.

The point is that the video is plain wrong in several place.

*bletch* in the interests of accuracy, replace "want" with "wanted to" - Apple's policy has now changed, as documented on the dirtylittlesecret website.

Mea culpa.

Indeed, and the "irreplacable" battery has always been replacable through third party or do-it-yourself solutions. Incidentally, you might find http://das.doit.wisc.edu/neistatoriginal.txt">this little exchange (http://das.doit.wisc.edu/neistatoriginal.txt) showing how reluctant the film makers were to post the information about the battery replacements interesting.

"I'm so fucking dumb I've not only videotaped myself committing criminal vandalism, I've released the footage publicly"

they weren't vandalizing. they were painting over the top of posters that are pasted on the sides of walls. There's no law (as far as I know) in the U.S. that says you can't write on posters that have already been pasted to walls...they aren't paid advertisements, its a public forum.

The one thing that they DO do that's illegal is moving the trash dumpster...that's private property, plus he climbed on it, which has other problems attached to it.

so, the person that said, "I'm so fucking dumb I've not only videotaped myself committing criminal vandalism, I've released the footage publicly", is "So fucking dumb to not realize that what the guy is doing is expressing himself, not vandalizing, therefor I should learn to actually think about things before popping my mouth off."

;-)

I personally don't care. I think its amusing that they've caused all this controversy. Its a fucking ipod. If only people were this rabid about their government, we might get some change.

The only problem being, when people do get as rabid about governments, they tend to do it with about as much grasp of the facts as these guys. Now, if people got rabid and did their research, too, then maybe...

I just laughed loud/long enough that I then had to explain to my two flatmates what I was laughing about.
