*brushes dust off his LJ*

Well now, what has brought me back to these long-neglected halls of blogging? The news that The Independent (UK national newspaper, for you US, Aussie and other non-Brit types) has partnered with LJ to relaunch its blogs.

That and the decoupling of LJ's server infrastructure from Six Apart's has made me wander back to the ol'neighbourhood to see how things are. And in what direction LJ's new owners are taking the service...
I've probably asked this before, but things move on...

Is there a Windows LJ client that is palpably better than using the web interface?

Thankyouverymuch.
Hello. Me again.

Yes, I'm still here. Yes, I'm still reading (and commenting sometimes) on LJ. But no, I'm not using it very much. And that bothers me. Why?

Well, while I was at Le Web 3 in Paris at the tail end of last year, I had the chance to catch up with the CEO of Six Apart, as we're enterprise customers of theirs. One of the things he talked about was the sale of LJ to SUP, and Chris prefaced the discussion with "I know you're a Livejournal user, but…"

And that left me thinking: am I really a Livejournal user any more? I mean, I rarely ever post here, and most of the time it's just a push from my Vox. And it's not as if I'm short on blogs to maintain:

One Man & His Blog
Tincan Alley
Leafshine: Lust for Flower
Coffee & Complexity
Fishnets & Fedoras

As you can see, the last two are a little under-maintained right now. :)

So, sensibly speaking, I should just give up on LJ. But I can't quite bring myself to do so, and here's why…

Morning all.

Welcome to your brand new, 100% more Russian Livejournal…
How well do you know your next-door neighbours?

I don't. At all. All I know is that they're a bunch of young chinese guys, and that there's a wall between us and them. And that's it.

However, one thing I do know is that Livejournal appears to have developed a Vox-like daily question feature…
This is my 1,000th Livejournal post.

And, like so many that preceded it, it will be almost content-free.

I'm sat in the work Starbucks, drinking coffee, checking e-mail and slowly realising that I've been stood up for a meeting. Ho hum.
...that I should start using this again, rather than just using it as a cross-post dump from Vox.

Where has this come from? Well, largely from researching this post. I realised that I sort of missed Livejournal. Vox, my new bloggy girlfriend, has turned my eye with all her fasy, ajax-y Web 2.0 goodness, and the fact that many people I know in the flesh are on it now. But LJ allowed a different kind of conversation, one that I do miss.

What else has been keeping me away? Well, things like this, this and this tend to bother me (I'm sorry Matt, but if you genuinely believe that, you're showing the same ignorance and prejudice that you often accuse religious folk of showing).  I don't have time or enough available attention in my life to deal with pointless drama or wilful ignorance.

On the other hand, there are lots of people on here whom I genuinely care about, and with whom I can have interesting debates about different subjects that are genuinely thought-provoking.

Perhaps I need to do some friend page weeding to put me at a point where LJ is an attractive place to me again.

Not really sure where I'm going with this, just musing aloud...
